Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson-Okojie, caused a stir on the Internet when she openly declared her support for the All Progressives Congress and its candidates in the 2023 elections.
The actress had on Wednesday shared pictures of herself with the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announcing her membership as part of the APC women presidential campaign team.
Sharing the photos from the campaign, the actress wrote, “Earlier today, I joined His Excellency, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the incredible women leaders that make up the APC ‘Women Presidential Campaign Team’ at the APC women Southwest Rally.
“As a woman, a mother, and the wife of an APC candidate named @princeodiokojie, I have faith in the APC’s agenda for women, which is in line with the 35% affirmative action mandate for women.
“I had the opportunity to hear from the horse’s mouth from the goodwill messages and conversations with the women leaders, and I have renewed faith and confidence in the good intentions, wonderful plans, and actions to come for the women of Nigeria and for the people of Nigeria.”
However, many of her fans expressed their displeasure with the actress’ choice on Twitter, making ‘Mercy Johnson’ one of the top trending topics on Thursday.
@odyloveth, a user on Twitter, wrote: “End Sars – Mercy Johnson won’t talk. She was mute despite the fact that half of her village was dying due to the flood. She won’t discuss the harshness of the police.
Mercy Johnson informs us today that the APC has plans for us in 2023. I hold the grading system responsible.
They counseled the actress to concentrate entirely on her hubby, No one is arguing that Mercy Johnson shouldn’t support her husband’s political career, according to a tweet from @eseohe k. She shouldn’t simply focus on trying to sell us APC. campaign solely for your hubby. “As a woman, I have faith in the APC strategy for women,” she said.
Some fans, however, defended the actress’s actions by saying that she was free to support whoever she chose to.
While I endorse Peter Obi, @isaacafrica_ commented, “I wouldn’t expect Mercy Johnson to back a party other than her husband’s.” It helps her marriage succeed, among other things.
It has nothing to do with party affiliation. Who is acting in Nigerians’ best interests is the key question. Why is it that she is so dark within APC?
@mrlurvy, another user on Twitter, stated that Mercy Johnson’s husband is flying the APC flag in his district. But you do anticipate Mercy to back a different cause, right? so that she can receive likes and retweets?
“Many people are crazy, and many are on social media.”
