Spain Unveils €14.1 Billion Support Plan
Trump Imposes Global Tariffs, Declares ‘Liberation Day’
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest tariff announcement, branding it “unprecedented” and a regression to “19th-century protectionism.”
Sánchez’s sharp criticism follows Trump’s Wednesday declaration of sweeping global tariffs, including a 10% baseline on all imports. The move, which the U.S. president hailed as an economic “liberation day” set for April 2, 2025, has triggered swift backlash from European leaders.
Spain Unveils €14.1 Billion Economic Shield
In response to the tariffs, Spain has unveiled a €14.1 billion support package to cushion its economy from potential fallout. The Spanish government insists the measures will safeguard industries and jobs that could be affected by the new U.S. trade restrictions.
Sánchez also urged the European Union to counter with its own set of retaliatory tariffs and create an aid fund sourced from the revenue generated by tariffs imposed on American goods.
Europe Under Fire from Both Sides—Sánchez
In a stern statement reported by Reuters, Sánchez warned that Europe is now facing a dual assault—economically from the West and militarily from the East.
“Just as we counter Russian aggression in the East, we now face an economic attack from the West,” Sánchez declared, signaling the seriousness of Trump’s trade measures.
Trump’s tariff plan represents one of the most aggressive U.S. trade policies in recent history, raising concerns over a potential trade war between the U.S. and the EU.
With tensions escalating, all eyes are on how Brussels and other European capitals will respond in the coming days.
