On Wednesday, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos state, announced a 50% price cut for all public transportation in the state for the upcoming week.
The governor stated that the action is intended to mitigate the consequences of gasoline and naira scarcity in a video that his chief press secretary, Gboyega Akosile, shared on Twitter.
For owners of Cowry Cards, the 50% discount is effective as of Thursday.
To further mitigate the effects of what our citizens are currently experiencing, Mr. Sanwo-Olu said, “I have immediately ordered that starting tomorrow, on all of our Lagos run bus system, all of our BRT buses, on all of our Lag ride taxis, all of our ferries, and all of our last miles buses and small buses that we have in the state, that they should be carrying passengers at 50% of the current fare and this will continue to happen using their Cowry Cards.”
“And we wish to extend the availability of this Cowry Card to all willing citizens. Over three million of our cowry cards are in circulation and in use.
Therefore, starting tomorrow morning, travelers will receive a 50% discount on all passenger routes in all of our buses, ferries, and taxis for the next week.
Additionally, the governor declared that food banks will be established for vulnerable residents all around the state.
According to him, “We are going to be identifying vulnerable spots in our communities and you would see us distributing food items, food stuffs that we are making arrangements for and we have tens of thousands that are already ready. We will be identifying various locations in which we will be distributing these food packs so that we can cushion the effects on all of our citizens.”
These changes occur just two weeks before the start of the general elections on February 25.
The All Progressives Congress is the candidate for the governor’s reelection (APC).
Earlier, Mr. Sanwo-Olu put an end to his campaigning activities permanently due to the rising violence brought on by the shortage of petrol and naira in other regions of the nation.
Violence and protests have resulted from the shortage in several sections of the nation.
