The Lagos Government’s intended salary increase for employees in the state’s public service has received praise from the Nigeria Labour Congress.
The praise was given in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Lagos by the NLC Chairman in Lagos, Ms. Funmi Sessi.
The announcement, she noted, “came at the appropriate time.”
According to NAN, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the hike on October 4 at a meeting with state public service employees while on a business visit to the state secretariat, Alausa.
He claimed that the level of inflation in the nation, which had been severely impacting the people, had prompted the planned increase.
But the governor claimed that details were being worked out and made no indication of the increment’s percentage or when it would begin.
If we must consider the justification for the rise, Sessi added, “it is a well-planned, thought-out increase.
“…after three years, we will reassess the wage, as stipulated in the agreement we signed during the 2016 new minimum wage.”
However, we were powerless to stop the Covid-19 epidemic, and following Covid-19, we could see how everything was escalating.
“The public sector employees are very grateful, and we appreciate the governor’s kind offer of gifts.
“Although we are unsure of the exact percentage by which the governor would raise the income, the workers are confident that he will take any action that will earn them a standing ovation.”
She asked labor firms to follow the governor’s lead and make sure that their workers received fair pay in light of the high cost of living in the current economy.
Because of the high expense of living, employers in the private sector, such as those in education, manufacturing, healthcare, and other industries, should be entitled to add palliatives to the wages of their employees.
Sessi advised the employees to work with the state governor and make sure they put in more effort to create the kind of state that everyone wanted.
“To whoever much is given, much is expected,” she admonished. “If the governor is doing so much to make sure that our welfare is being taken care of, we should be willing to participate and do more.”
We already work together with the governor, but we’re going above and beyond to accomplish more. (NAN)
