The Plateau State Police Command has announced the deployment of over 8,000 personnel to ensure security during the local government elections scheduled for Wednesday, October 9, across the state’s 17 local government areas.
On Tuesday, DSP Alabo Alfred, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the deployment while overseeing the assignment of officers to various locations. He emphasized that officers would arrive at their designated polling units promptly to facilitate a smooth electoral process. The police are committed to maintaining law and order, ensuring voter safety, and preventing any disruptions.
To achieve these objectives, Alfred outlined the police’s strategic plans, which include adequate personnel at polling units and established communication networks for real-time monitoring of the situation. He issued a stern warning to anyone intending to incite trouble, stating that the police would not tolerate electoral violence.
In a collaborative effort to promote a peaceful electoral process, 11 political parties have entered a peace agreement. This accord was facilitated by the Plateau State Peace Building Agency (PPBA) in partnership with the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC).
Julie Sanda, the Director General of the PPBA, highlighted the agreement’s aim to encourage peaceful conduct among political parties and their supporters before, during, and after the election. She stated, “This platform signifies our commitment to peace and the principles of democracy. The PPBA, along with PLASIEC and other stakeholders, is dedicated to implementing proactive measures to prevent violence at every stage of the electoral process, including promoting peace and facilitating dialogue to ensure transparency.”
