The Nigerian Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation for the families of those who lost their lives during the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The decision was announced on Wednesday during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who described the deaths as a painful sacrifice in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against insecurity.

Under the approved support package, each family of the two teachers killed by the abductors and the three security personnel who died during the rescue mission will receive ₦10 million. The Senate donation is intended to provide assistance to the bereaved families while honouring the bravery and commitment of those who lost their lives during the tragic incident.

Akpabio praised the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for successfully rescuing the abducted victims after more than 50 days in captivity. The operation ended the victims’ 56-day ordeal and brought relief to their families and communities.

The Senate had earlier identified the three security personnel who died during the rescue operation. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele named them as Lieutenant F. A. Isaac of the Nigerian Army; Private Silas Musa of the 81 Battalion, Nigerian Army; and Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force.

Bamidele also confirmed that Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain of the 81 Battalion suffered injuries during the mission. The Senate donation reflects the chamber’s recognition of the risks faced by security personnel and civilians during efforts to tackle terrorism and insecurity across Nigeria. The gesture also highlights the importance of supporting families affected by national security challenges.

The Senate donation serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals who work to protect lives and restore safety in affected communities.

How can more support be provided to families affected by insecurity across Nigeria?
