The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of the nominees forwarded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the positions of Chairman and Commissioners of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM).
The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the report presented by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service Matters, Senator Cyril Oluwale Fasuyi (Ekiti North).
Presenting the report during plenary, Senator Fasuyi explained that the nominees met all constitutional and statutory requirements, adding that the committee found them qualified to occupy their respective positions.
Those confirmed include Agbaje Opeyemi Olukayode as Chairman; Samuel Chigizie Uwandu, CPAas Commissioner (Technical); Charles Efe Sylvester Emukowhate as Commissioner (Inspectorate); Bello Abubakar Malabu as Commissioner (Finance); and Hon. Hafiz Muhammad Kawu Ibrahim (OON) as Commissioner (Administration).
The appointments reflect the federal character principle, with the nominees drawn from various geopolitical zones South West, North West, South East, South South, and North East.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, while congratulating the newly confirmed appointees, urged them to ensure transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the management of pension funds, emphasizing the need to safeguard the interests of Nigerian retirees.
He also commended the Committee on Establishment and Public Service Matters for the timely consideration of the nominations, noting that pension administration remains a critical part of the nation’s economic stability and social welfare system.
With the confirmation, the new leadership of PENCOM is expected to commence work immediately in line with its mandate to regulate, supervise, and ensure effective pension administration in Nigeria.
