Tunji Wusu –
On July 25, the Senate encouraged the FG to oppose the proposed rise in electricity rates by 11 successor electricity distribution companies.
Additionally, the upper legislative chamber requested that the NERC investigate the rate review applications submitted by the Discos while taking into account public interest, affordability, and the need for better service delivery.
It further encouraged the Discos to stop using estimated billing and offer prepaid meters at reasonable pricing to all electricity users.
They additionally requested that NERC look at potential solutions to the financial issues the Discos were facing, including expanding revenue collection methods, increasing operational effectiveness, and minimizing technical and commercial losses.
The Senate emphasized that ordinary Nigerians must be given room to breathe and that anything that would cause them great misery would be rejected.
