The recently nominated candidates for the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) post have been vetted by the Senate.
During Wednesday’s plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio delivered a letter from President Bola Tinubu asking for the screening and validation of the RECs’ nominations for INEC.
Ten new RECs for INEC were appointed last week by Tinubu, in compliance with Section 154(1) of the Constitution, each for a five-year tenure.
The new appointees are:
- Etekamba Umoren — Akwa Ibom State Resident Electoral Commissioner
- Isah Shaka Ehimeakne — Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner
- Oluwatoyin Babalola — Ekiti State Resident Electoral Commissioner
- Abubakar Ahmed Ma’aji — Gombe State Resident Electoral Commissioner
- Shehu Wahab — Kwara State Resident Electoral Commissioner
- Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi — Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner
- Aminu Kasimu Idris — Nasarawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner
- Prof. Mohammed Yelwa — Niger State Resident Electoral Commissioner
- Dr. Anugbum Onuoha — Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner
- Isma’ila Kaura Moyi — Zamfara State Resident Electoral Commissioner.
Senate Looks Into TEN REC Nominees by INECThe removal of the 10 RECs, if confirmed, requires the approval of both the President and a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly.
