The Senate has approved a total of N403.1 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) for the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years to strengthen the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force, improve personnel welfare, modernise policing infrastructure and enhance security across the country.
The approval followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs during plenary on Thursday. The report was presented by the committee’s Vice Chairman, Senator Yunus Akintunde (Oyo Central), on behalf of the Chairman, Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Madori (Jigawa East).
The approved appropriation consists of N170.10 billion for the 2025 fiscal year and N233.96 billion for the 2026 fiscal year.
Presenting the committee’s report, Senator Akintunde said the proposed budgets were carefully scrutinised and found to be consistent with the statutory mandate of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to provide critical intervention support to the Nigeria Police Force.
He explained that the funds would be deployed for the procurement of operational vehicles, communication gadgets, arms support equipment, forensic and intelligence tools, rehabilitation and construction of police barracks and stations, training and retraining of officers, as well as other projects aimed at improving policing nationwide.
According to the approved estimates for the 2026 fiscal year, N43.78 billion was earmarked for capital expenditure, while N179.11 billion was allocated to projects under the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund Headquarters, bringing the total capital allocation for the year to N222.89 billion.
The Senate also approved N1.86 billion for personnel costs and N9.21 billion for overhead expenditure, bringing the total recurrent allocation for 2026 to N11.07 billion.
Lawmakers noted that the 2026 budget would be financed through statutory sources, including 0.5 per cent of revenue accruing to the Federation Account, 0.5 per cent of Value Added Tax (VAT), 0.05 per cent of the net profits of companies operating in Nigeria, as well as grants, donations and other legitimate sources provided by law.
For the 2025 fiscal year, the Senate approved N159.74 billion for capital projects, with N27.29 billion allocated to the Nigeria Police Trust Fund Headquarters and N132.45 billion to the Nigeria Police Force for the execution of projects designed to improve operational effectiveness.
The recurrent component of the 2025 budget includes N1.82 billion for personnel costs and N8.54 billion for overhead expenses, bringing the total recurrent expenditure for the year to N10.36 billion.
The committee stated that the 2025 budget would equally be funded through statutory allocations, VAT receipts, contributions from the net profits of companies operating in Nigeria, grants, donations and other approved sources.
Senator Akintunde said the committee recommended that the management of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund should give priority to projects that directly enhance the operational efficiency of the Nigeria Police Force, improve officers’ welfare, strengthen training programmes and upgrade police infrastructure across the country.
He also urged the Fund to strengthen its monitoring and evaluation framework to ensure transparency, accountability and value for money in the execution of projects.
The committee further stressed the need for the timely implementation of the approved budgets, noting that effective utilisation of the funds would significantly improve the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force to tackle emerging security threats, combat crime and provide better protection for lives and property.
The Nigeria Police Trust Fund was established to provide sustainable funding for the Nigeria Police Force through dedicated statutory contributions and intervention programmes aimed at modernising policing, improving operational readiness and enhancing the welfare and professionalism of police personnel nationwide.
