Babatunji Wusu –
The families of the 16 army officers and soldiers who were killed have been asked by the Senate to get immediate compensation from the federal government.
The senators made the plea on Tuesday during a session when they held a minute of silence in memory of the military personnel who died in Okuama Community, Delta State, last Thursday.
Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, made a motion during the session on the killing of Nigerian Army men and the need for an immediate investigation.
Following the motion’s adoption, the Senate instructed the Army, Navy, and Defence Committees to coordinate with the Nigerian Army in order to conduct an investigation into the issue.
In addition, the Red Chamber encouraged the federal government to make sure that individuals accountable for the horrible crime be located, captured, and forced to bear the full weight of the law via an open and honest legal system.
Recall that last week, while on a peace mission in the Okuama community in Delta State’s Bomadi Local Government Area, sixteen Nigerian Army officers and soldiers lost their lives.
In a statement released on Monday, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) revealed that the dead army soldiers comprised the 181 Amphibious Battalion’s Commanding Officer, two majors, a captain, and twelve battalion members.
The names and ranks of the fallen officers and troops were also made public by DHQ.
