Babatunji Wusu –
Amos Yohanna of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been sworn in by the Nigerian Senate as the senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District.
Yohanna takes over for All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Elisha Abbo, who was recently removed from the Red Chamber by an Appeal Court decision.
At the direction of Deputy President of the Senate Jibrin Barau, who oversaw the plenary, Yohanna was administered the oath of office and the pledge of allegiance by Senate Clerk Chinedu Akubueze.
Remember that on February 27, 2023, Yohanna of the PDP lost to Abbo, who received 71,927 votes, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Yohanna received 61,895 votes.
Dissatisfied with the result, Abbo was hauled before the tribunal by the PDP and Yohanna, who challenged the election’s conclusion and forced Abbo back to the Senate.
Yohanna claimed in his petition, EPT/AD/SEN/02/2023, that corrupt acts or a failure to abide by the Election Act 2022’s requirements rendered Senator Abbo’s election unlawful.
According to him, Senator Abbo was not legitimately elected by the majority of valid votes cast in the election due to overvoting, fake entries, vote tampering, and cancellation at multiple polling places.
But in its decision, the tribunal denied the petition, granted damages, and demanded that the petitioner give N600,000 to Abbo.
Yohanna was not happy and went to the Court of Appeal, the last court to hear cases involving the National Assembly and reach a decision in his favor.
