Former Adamawa North lawmaker, Senator Elisha Abbo, has been arrested and is being interrogated by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja, over allegations that he raped a 13-year-old girl.

According to the victim’s family, the incident occurred on June 29, 2025, at Abbo’s residence in Katampe, Abuja. They alleged that the senator lured the teenager to his home before sexually assaulting her.

The parents further claimed that after the incident, Abbo made repeated efforts to buy their silence. He was said to have sent various sums of money to the girl’s father, pleading with them not to escalate the matter. The family maintained that they rejected the offers, insisting that justice must take its course.

In a further twist, the family alleged that Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed (Binani), a former governorship candidate in Adamawa State, visited their residence, urging them to keep the matter private to avoid scandal.

Police sources confirmed that the former senator surrendered himself at the FCID headquarters in Abuja, where he is currently being questioned by investigators. The victim has reportedly undergone medical examination at a government hospital, and the result is expected to form part of the evidence in the case.

This is not the first time Abbo has faced public controversy. In 2019, he was caught on video assaulting a woman in a sex toy shop in Abuja, sparking outrage across the country. In October 2023, the Court of Appeal nullified his election and removed him from the Senate. Earlier in 2025, the Brekete Family, popularly known as the Human Rights Radio platform, accused him of sending nude pictures of his girlfriend, an allegation that generated heated public debate.

The Nigerian law provides severe punishment for sexual offences against minors. Section 31(1) of the Child Rights Act 2003 states: “No person shall have sexual intercourse with a child.” Section 31(2) further prescribes that “any person who contravenes this section commits an offence of rape and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for life.”

If found guilty, Abbo risks a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
