The Senator representing Kano North Senatorial district, Jibrin Barau has decried incessant road crashes on the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway owing to reckless driving.
Speaking on a motion, “the need to address the increasing rate of traffic accidents along Kaduna – Zaria – Kano road”, sponsored by Senator Kwari Suleiman Abdu representing Kaduna North Senatorial district, Barau said those accidents were avoidable if road users obeyed diversion signals.
According to him, casualties arising from road accidents on the highway were alarming, adding that it was unacceptable.
He called for the deployment of medical facilities and FRSC personnel for monitoring of road users, as well as prompt response to casualties on the road.
The lawmaker said, “When President Muhammadu Buhari awarded the contract to reconstruct Kaduna – Zaria – Kano road in 2018, it was a welcome development.
“To those of us from the Northwest, it was a legacy project and I must commend him for that, but due to the ongoing reconstruction, there are many diversions.
“Drivers plying the road don’t care to obey traffic signs at diversion areas and as a result leads to accidents. If road users obey signs, it will minimize accidents.
“At this point, I want to call for more provision of medical facilities to treat casualties and road traffic personnel to monitor those plying that road. Thank you Mr. President.”
