Serena Williams is set to make her long-awaited return to singles competition after receiving the final wildcard entry for Wimbledon, marking her first singles appearance in four years.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion had already secured a place at the prestigious grass-court tournament after she and her sister, Venus Williams, were awarded a wildcard for the doubles event. However, the latest announcement means Serena Williams will also compete in the singles draw at the All England Club.

The American tennis icon, who has won Wimbledon seven times, last appeared at the tournament in 2022. On that occasion, she suffered a first-round defeat to France’s Harmony Tan. Later that year, she reached the third round of the US Open before losing to Ajla Tomljanovic. Following that defeat, Serena avoided describing her departure from the sport as retirement, stating instead that she was “evolving” away from professional tennis.

Interest in a possible comeback grew when Serena Williams re-entered the sport’s anti-doping testing programme last year. That move fuelled speculation that the former world number one could return to competitive action.

The rumours were confirmed recently when Serena Williams made a surprise appearance at the Queen’s Club Championships, where she partnered Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko in the doubles event. The pair won their opening match before withdrawing after Mboko sustained an injury during her singles campaign.

Serena also featured at the Berlin Open, teaming up with Karolina Muchova in doubles, although the pair exited in the first round.

The return of Serena Williams is expected to be one of the major storylines at Wimbledon, which runs from 29 June to 12 July, as tennis fans eagerly await the next chapter in the career of one of the sport’s greatest players.
