Grammy-nominated musician Seun Kuti has sharply rebuked comparisons between Afrobeats star Wizkid and the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, describing such claims as a direct affront to his father’s legacy.
Kuti delivered the warning during a recent Instagram livestream, urging Wizkid’s fanbase, popularly known as Wizkid FC, to stop invoking Fela’s name in online debates. According to him, placing any contemporary artist alongside the Afrobeat originator diminishes the depth and historical weight of Fela’s work.
He accused some fans of acting from ignorance rather than artistic appreciation, insisting that their repeated comparisons reflect a lack of understanding of what Fela represented musically, politically, and spiritually. Kuti maintained that the distinction between generations should be respected, stressing that Fela’s impact cannot be replicated or substituted.
The Afrobeat frontman further argued that excessive fan rivalry has harmed the music industry, noting that online hostility has strained collaborations and distorted genuine musical discourse. He contended that fans should focus on enjoying their preferred artist’s work without measuring it against an unrelated legacy.
Kuti concluded by challenging fans to engage with music on its own merit, asserting that constant comparisons signal dissatisfaction rather than admiration.
