According to a report in the El Pas newspaper on Sunday, the woman who accused Dani Alves of sexual assault in a nightclub last year won’t press for monetary damages from the Brazil soccer player.
According to El Pas, sources close to the investigation informed the newspaper that the 23-year-old had chosen to renounce her claim to damages in the event that Alves is found guilty. She reportedly claimed that her only goal is to see that the player is sentenced to prison time in order to make sure that justice is served.
According to the Cadena Ser radio network, Alves, who insists he did nothing wrong, requested the judge testify once more on Sunday to share his account of what transpired in December at a posh nightclub in Barcelona. According to Alves’ defense team, he altered his account of what transpired during his testimony, according to Brazil’s GloboEsporte.com.
After hearing the testimony of Alves, his accuser, and a witness, the judge on Friday agreed with the state prosecutors that he should be kept in jail without the option of posting bail. The Brazilian celebrity stayed in a pre-trial facility close to Barcelona for two nights.
Alves’ case was kept under wraps by the police and the court, and the Spanish press has published conflicting accounts of what allegedly happened.
According to Spain’s sexual consent law, which was passed last year, sexual assault includes a broad range of sex crimes, from online abuse and groping to rape, each of which carries a variety of potential penalties. The maximum sentence for the worst case of rape with violence is 15 years.
Alves, who is 39 years old, has won 42 football championships, including two Copa Americas with Brazil and three Champions Leagues with Barcelona. Last month, he participated in his third World Cup, the only major championship he has yet to win.
After learning of Alves’ arrest in Spain, Alves’ contract with Mexican club Pumas was terminated.
