Former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has sharply criticised United States President Donald Trump over his threat to impose a 100 per cent tariff on Canadian goods, describing the move as unimaginable and condemnable.

Sani’s reaction followed Trump’s warning on Saturday that the United States could slap a 100 per cent tariff on all goods imported from Canada if the country proceeds with a trade deal with China.

In a post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, the former senator argued that Canada, as a sovereign nation, has the right to engage in economic relations with any country of its choice without external intimidation.

According to him, Canada is a prosperous and peaceful country whose foreign and trade policies should not be dictated by threats from another nation, regardless of its global influence.

Sani further faulted Trump’s posture, stating that it was disturbing for a leader of a democratic country to resort to what he described as menacing and despotic conduct on the global stage.

He called on defenders of freedom, democracy, and international law to stand firmly with Canada, warning that such threats undermine global cooperation and respect for sovereignty.
