VP Kashim Shettima, the vice president, has counseled the incoming MPs to put the stability of the country before their own financial interests.
Shettima said this in a speech during the final session on Saturday, where he urged the members of the 10th Assembly to cast their votes on Tuesday.
Since MPs have been jostling for the presiding officers in both the red and green chambers, the fight for the Senate leadership has been fierce for a number of months.
On June 13, 2023, when the 10th National Assembly is sworn in, senators-elect will choose a new Senate President to oversee Senate operations for the ensuing four years.
There have been allegations of “dollar rain,” in which some candidates spent a lot of money attempting to win over lawmakers.
Shettima pleaded with his colleagues on Saturday to put the stability of the nation above all other considerations.
“To my colleagues who will be leaving this chamber, I address you not as colleagues left behind but rather as experienced legislators who have become a crucial part of my history,” he said. We have a lot in common, including supporting one another during difficult times. We have fought tenaciously for the advancement of our beloved nation.
“I’m going to leave you with a conundrum, my new comrades. This country’s stability outweighs the stability of our pockets. Let’s cast our votes wisely on Tuesday. Let’s cast our votes for Nigeria.
“Our country’s stability is preferable to our pockets’ stability. Let’s use our Tuesday vote wisely.
