Six people have died as a result of a dispute over a stolen motorcycle between two competing cult groups in the northern Cross River State region’s Obudu Local Government Area.
Local resident Patricia stated to Vanguard that the conflict began when a member of one of the factions stole a rival gang member’s motorcycle. The mother of the youngster consented to buy another machine when the thief was asked to do so by the owner of the motorcycle, but the owner’s gang insisted on burning the thief on fire to make up for the crime, and the thief’s gang members opposed.
“Three more people were slain overnight as sporadic gunshots could be heard around Obudu town, spreading fear. There were three more fatalities during the night, according to reports we received this morning (Tuesday).
She claimed that because so many young people in the area are members of one or more cults, gunfights between cult groups occur frequently in the town.
We are genuinely sick of these folks because they constantly boast about their exploits and get into gunfights over the smallest of disagreements, she remarked.
Calls from our reporter were not returned by Irene Ugbo, the public relations officer for the Cross River Police Command.
