The Osun State Police Command has confirmed that six people tragically lost their lives in the political unrest that unfolded on Monday. The violence erupted following efforts by local government officials elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the October 2022 elections to enforce a court ruling. This led to resistance from members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), culminating in deadly clashes.
In a statement on Tuesday, Police spokesperson Yemisi Opalola expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and their property. She assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and held accountable. The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abba, has already initiated discussions with various groups to prevent future occurrences.
Opalola urged residents to maintain patience and allow security forces to carry out their duties to restore peace. She further warned those inciting violence to desist, stressing the state’s reputation for peace and stability. The police have been bolstered by the deployment of mobile policemen from outside the state, who arrived last night to assist with the situation.
The political crisis has sparked a blame game between the APC and PDP, with both parties accusing each other of escalating the violence. Among those killed in the unrest was Remi Abbas, a former chairman of Irewole Local Government Area, who had been elected during the January 2018 local government elections.
