The Rivers Police Command has verified the arrest of six suspects in connection with the gruesome murder of Bako Angbashim, the Ahoada Divisional Police Officer, DPO, on Friday by members of a cult group.
The suspects were apprehended on Saturday during an operation by the State Commissioner of Police, his management team, and tactical units in the Odumude community where the DPO was murdered in order to recover the deceased’s remains, according to CP Nwonyi Emeka Polycarp.
During the operation, a locally manufactured pistol and several charms were also recovered.
These individuals and the confiscated materials are currently in police custody and being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Port Harcourt.
The suspects’ detention follows the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara’s, marching order to security agencies in the state to apprehend all those guilty for DPO Bako Angbashim’s murder.
During an emergency Security Council meeting in Port Harcourt on Sunday, Gov. Fubara delivered the charge to the security services.
The hunting for the killers has sparked panic and prompted residents to abandon the area.
The Police Commissioner has also appointed SP Zuokumor Richard as the new DPO for the Ahoada Division, while a big manhunt is underway for the other cult gang members involved in Angbashim’s murder.
A half-unit of men from Mopol 48, a third unit from Mopol 19, 56, and tactical teams have also fortified the region.
According to the CP, the personnel have been tasked with conducting a comprehensive search of the area, apprehending those guilty for the DPO’s death, recovering the body, and locating any operational weapons used.
The operation will also continue, according to the police, while the inquiry is underway.
