Ahmed Aliyu, the governor of Sokoto State, has issued a warning that his administration will not tolerate the problem of blasphemy.
In accordance with Islamic law, Aliyu further forewarned that his administration would take immediate action against anyone found responsible for any act that sought to diminish the stature of the Prophet Muhammad.
Following the mob attack that claimed one Usman Buda, a butcher, was killed for allegedly blaspheming the Prophet on Sunday morning, the governor issued the warnings.
Abubakar Bawa, the governor’s top press secretary, issued a statement that was made accessible to newsmen and urged the state’s residents to always maintain composure and adhere to the law.
The message also warned against acts that could degrade the personality of Prophet Muhammad, particularly in Sokoto, a primarily Muslim-dominated community.
“Sokoto people have a great deal of respect and regard for Prophet Muhammad SAW, so all residents must respect and protect his dignity and personality.”
“I want to appeal to the people of Sokoto State not to take the law into their own hands, but rather to report any alleged crime or blasphemy to the appropriate authorities for action.”
“Because our religion discourages taking laws into one’s own hands, let us try to be good followers of our religion.”
“The current administration will not take blasphemy lightly, and will deal decisively with anyone found guilty of any act aimed at degrading the personality of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, in accordance with Islamic laws,” the statement said.
The governor assured the people of the state of his administration’s commitment to ensuring the protection of all law-abiding individuals’ lives and property.
