Babatunji Wusu –
The Nigerian Army’s 7 Division in Maiduguri has detained a soldier in connection with the alleged murder of a truck driver at a checkpoint on the Maiduguri-Dikwa-Gamboru Road.
The truck driver’s death resulted from a confrontation that started when the soldier at the checkpoint misinterpreted what the driver was saying.
However, it has been reported that commercial drivers have chosen to avoid the busy border road in protest following the unfortunate killing, leaving many travelers stranded.
Lt. Col. A.Y. Jingina, the 7 Division Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Thursday. He also said that the Army had launched an investigation after receiving a complaint from the National Union of Road Transport Workers.
“Moreover, engagement has been established with NURTW towards a peaceful resolution of the incident,” the statement said. The division has promised the family of the deceased and the NURTW that it will do all within its power to bring the family justice and that nothing will be overlooked in this regard.
The victim’s family is entitled to justice, thus the division has taken action by arresting the soldier and initiating an investigation.
As we operate within the bounds of the law, it’s also important to note that the Division does not tolerate any unprofessional behavior from its personnel. The Division would like to reiterate to the public that we will continue to be professional and resolute in our shared endeavor to address insecurity in Borno State.
