Tunji Wusu –
Charles Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, has urged the federal government to act promptly to repair the section of the Onitsha-Owerri Road that has entirely failed due to gully erosion.
During a Monday site inspection, Soludo, who was accompanied by his chief of staff, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, asserted that the state government is responding to the situation urgently and cannot wait for the federal government to take action.
He stated that Anambra State has more than 1,000 active gully erosion sites, and that this incident is only a taste of the state’s many erosion sites.
Ezeajughi stated, “We are pleading with the Federal Government to step in immediately and prevent this road from completely collapsing.
According to Engineer Ifeanyi Okomma, Commissioner for Works, the erosion along the Onitsha-Owerri Road is significant and extends for 8 kilometers plus 100 meters.
He pointed out that the Anambra State Government is acting as an intervenor with Soludo’s agreement, arresting the issue by halting the erosion that Tamad Construction Limited has already started.
The second goal, which must be accomplished while the State waits for the Federal Government, is to stop further erosion slide, according to the Commissioner.
The state’s commissioner of the environment, Mr. Felix Odimegwu, advocated for more money for the environment and referred to erosion as an existential threat.
He claimed that while pleading with the federal government to become involved in the state’s erosion crisis, the state government has been providing palliative measures to moderate the level of damages that have happened.
Sir Obadi Ifedili, President-General of the Oba Community, thanked Governor Soludo for sending his team to check out the persistent issue of gully erosion and begged with the federal government for a prompt response because the road is a federal road that connects to other states.
Along with other participants, the inspection included the Chairman of the Transition Committee for Idemili South, Mrs. Amaka Obi, the Governor’s Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, and stakeholders from the Oba community.
