After a tumultuous Asian Cup match with South Korea, Son Heung-min admits he thought about giving up on international football, but he chose to play on behalf of the supporters.
In the immediate aftermath of a 2-0 semifinal loss to Jordan last month, the captain of South Korea and the Spurs raised questions about his future on the international scene.
Later on, it became known that the 31-year-old had a brawl with teammate Lee Kang-in the night before the game, which caused him to play with a dislocated finger.
After just a year in charge, Jurgen Klinsmann was fired, despite his pledge to bring South Korea its first Asian Cup in 64 years.
Following Thursday’s sad 1-1 home tie with Thailand in a World Cup qualifier, Son told reporters, “Playing for the national team is a promise between myself and the fans.”
He stated, “I really want to honor that,” according to Yonhap News Agency.
“I’m going to play hard and keep my head down, and I hope I can become a stronger person so I never have to consider giving up again.”
Son revealed how close he was to quitting football for his country, South Korea, and that he had consulted with Park Ji-sung, a former star for Manchester United.
“I’ve always felt appreciative and honored to be on the national team; I’ve never once taken it for granted,” Son continued.
“But I believe I would have given up if I had only been thinking about myself.”
In the latter moments of the first half, Son scored his 45th goal for his nation against Thailand, but the visitors equalized shortly after the hour.
Tuesday’s matchup between the two teams takes place in Bangkok as South Korea approaches the next round of World Cup qualifying.
