Over 1,400 South Africans have signed a petition demanding the removal of 23-year-old Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina from the Miss South Africa beauty pageant due to her Nigerian heritage.
Adetshina was born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican descent. Currently studying law in Cape Town, she is among the top 13 contestants vying for the Miss SA 2024 title.
The petition gained momentum after Adetshina removed Nigerian and Mozambican flags from her TikTok profile earlier this week. Additionally, some controversy surrounds her status as a divorced mother, although Miss SA’s updated rules from 2022 permit divorced and married women to compete.
The Miss South Africa pageant has confirmed that Adetshina meets their eligibility requirements, as she holds a valid South African ID.
