Governors from the southern region of Nigeria have thrown their weight behind Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s stance on the tenure of local government chairmen in Rivers State. Addressing the political turmoil stemming from attempts to extend the chairmen’s tenure, Dapo Abiodun, Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum and Governor of Ogun State, emphasized the sanctity of constitutional provisions regarding the tenure of elected officials.

In a televised interview, Abiodun criticized the decision by the Rivers State House of Assembly to extend the tenure of local government chairmen, which was subsequently rejected by Governor Fubara. Abiodun asserted that such actions undermine democratic principles and set a dangerous precedent for the future of governance in Nigeria.

“It is unconstitutional for anyone to extend the tenure of constitutionally elected public servants once their tenure has expired,” Abiodun stated firmly. “Allowing such extensions could erode democratic values and potentially disrupt our democratic process.”

He emphasized the collective stance of southern governors against tenure extensions, stressing that adherence to constitutional provisions is crucial to maintaining the integrity of democratic institutions.

Beyond local government issues, Abiodun highlighted regional infrastructure development initiatives discussed during the forum. He expressed appreciation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to constructing the coastal road, describing it as a transformative project that will enhance economic integration and create employment opportunities across the southern states.

“In addition to infrastructure, we deliberated on a modal transport master plan aimed at integrating rail, water, and road transportation systems,” Abiodun added. “This holistic approach to transportation is essential for promoting investment, facilitating economic growth, and improving the overall welfare of our people.”

The governors’ consensus underscores their commitment to upholding democratic norms while advancing strategic initiatives aimed at regional development and prosperity.
