Spain advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 Women’s Euro by defeating host nation Switzerland 2-0 in a hard-fought quarterfinal match on Friday. After a stalemate for much of the first hour, Spain found their rhythm and ended the contest decisively.
Athenea del Castillo, coming off the bench, opened the scoring in the 66th minute, expertly finishing a back-heel assist from playmaker Aitana Bonmati. Five minutes later, Claudia Pina doubled the lead with a stunning curling shot into the top corner, capitalizing on a crucial turnover by Switzerland captain Lia Waelti.
Earlier in the match, Spain’s Mariona Caldentey missed a penalty after being fouled, and Alexia Putellas also missed a late spot-kick, but Spain’s composure prevailed. Switzerland, who had defended resolutely and attacked on counter-breaks, fought valiantly until the final whistle despite being reduced to ten players following a stoppage-time red card for Noelle Maritz.
Defender Laia Aleixandri praised her team’s mental strength and maturity, emphasizing the pressure and stakes of a European quarterfinal. Both teams showed mutual respect as Spain formed a guard of honour for their hosts post-match.
Spain now awaits the winner of the quarterfinal between France and Germany, ready to embrace the challenge ahead as they celebrate their hard-earned place among Europe’s elite four.
