The seats of the lawmakers who defected have been declared empty by Edison Ehie, the speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has gained support from MPs who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after being purportedly loyal to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Only governor-supporting legislators were present for the Wednesday plenary when Ehie declared the defectors’ seats void.
This occurs in the midst of the Rivers State House of Assembly being demolished.
Ten bulldozers were driven into the State House of Assembly Complex this morning on Moscow Road in Port Harcourt, demolishing the building.
Punch reports that Ehie brought up at the meeting that the complex needed repairs after the October 30, 2023 explosion shook the facility. Ehie said the governor would arrange for a substitute location for them to sit while the repairs were being done.
This development is taking place in the midst of Rivers State’s ongoing political crisis.
