Babatunji Wusu –
Under the direction of Comrade Abass Akinremi Ojo, the Great Ife Students’ Union has addressed an open letter to the Osun Governor, Ademola Adeleke, regarding the condition of the Ede road, particularly between Modomo and Mayfair roundabout.
The union officers have taken notice of the road’s appalling condition throughout the years and have chosen to take action by sending an open letter to the state governor.
The union conveyed the anguish and suffering of the Great IFE students in the open letter forwarded to the office of the Deputy Governor of the state and the Ministry of Works and Transportation.
The union, according to the open letter, appreciates the governor’s enormous contributions to the welfare and accomplishment of state initiatives since taking office.
However, it emphasizes even more how dangerous the impacted routes are for travelers’ safety. Which include; Uneven surfaces, potholes, and cracks not only put vehicles at risk but also seriously jeopardize the safety of drivers, bikers, and pedestrians. The lives of students are at risk due to these traffic conditions, which raise the possibility of collisions and injuries. In order to safeguard the safety of everyone who uses these routes, the union begs for immediate action.
The union believes that Great Ife students do not deserve such punishment from the current administration, so calling the state governor’s attention to the level of neglect these roads have received from previous administrations and even from this administration is sarcastic, Shambolic, and painful.
As a result, these roadways have evolved into more than just death traps. Nowadays, driving on the crater- and gully-filled highways is a suicide mission.
The union leaders added that since the university community depends largely on mobility for the flow of goods and services, the quality of the roads has a negative effect on the local economy.
Additionally, it was discovered that businesses are also negatively impacted by the existing road conditions, increasing costs as a result of their inability to operate effectively.
A task force or committee should be established specifically to oversee the planning, implementation, and monitoring of road maintenance projects, the union further urged the state governor. Doing so would ensure accountability, transparency, and the prompt completion of the required repairs.
The union said that working with regional engineering and construction companies “could also provide valuable expertise and support in this endeavor.”
