Sultan Urges FG to Provide Funding to Address Challenges in Nigeria’s Education Sector

Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, has called on governments at all levels to provide more funding to Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. The Sultan made this appeal during the 76th Foundation Day of the University of Ibadan, held on Monday.

Abubakar highlighted that financial constraints are one of the major challenges faced by higher education institutions in Nigeria. He emphasized that addressing these challenges through adequate funding is crucial for improving the quality of education and the output of Nigeria’s universities.

In his remarks, the Sultan acknowledged the global economic difficulties, noting that while many countries face financial difficulties, prioritizing education would help raise the standards of Nigerian universities and contribute to resolving some of the country’s social problems. He urged governments and the public to support the efforts of university management in maintaining standards, despite limited resources.

Abubakar also commended the role of parents and guardians, recognizing the sacrifices they make to educate their children, especially given the recent economic challenges. He expressed hope that the successful graduation of students would bring a sense of fulfillment to these families.

In addition, the Sultan welcomed the newly appointed Governing Council of the University of Ibadan, led by Chief Bisi Akande. He praised Akande’s generosity, revealing that upon his appointment as Pro-Chancellor, Akande had converted all allowances and benefits associated with his office into an endowment fund for deserving students, specifically in the basic sciences (Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics).

Abubakar’s speech underscored the importance of collaborative efforts from all stakeholders—government, parents, students, and university management—to overcome the challenges facing tertiary education in Nigeria.

The event was attended by high-profile government representatives, including the Minister of State for Education, and saw the graduation of 485 students who received their Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the university.
