Chief Segun Odegbami, the legendary leader of the Super Eagles, has urged his team to win the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, ahead of their matchup against Guinea-Bissau in Group A.

Odegbami, who made this request while chatting with the players at the team hotel, expressed his conviction that the team will win the competition.

With 46 caps and 23 goals, Odegbami played a key role in leading Nigeria to its first AFCON in the 1980 competition held in Nigeria.

He stated, “It’s genuinely from inside to go there and start playing like champions because you are good and confident, you can play it. I saw one of the best and most masterful displays of the right wing in Aina. You (Aina) are absolutely brilliant in determination and composure. You can go on, for all the players who are going to entertain us, who are going to win for us and win for yourselves.” He had never done this before, but he was doing it because he wanted you to believe it too.

“Look, I really do believe it. I’m here to support you and wish you success. I’ll be keeping an eye on you today. As per our tradition, this will be a challenging battle.

“After we win one, everyone says, ‘The next one is simple.’ That’s when it gets tough, so I don’t expect an easy match; instead, go with confidence, composure, and calmness, take your time, and do what you do best. If you do that, you’ll win in any situation.

“And I’ll be here with you until the very end. May God bless you and be with you, and I hope the best for you.”

Whatever the result of today’s match between Equatorial Guinea and the host Ivory Coast, at 18:00, the Super Eagles will advance to the round of 16 if they defeat Guinea-Bissau or draw with them at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny stadium.
