-Power Boost Hits Northern Nigeria as TCN Energises New Transformers
–Kebbi Substation Upgrade Raises Transmission Capacity, Improves Supply to Sokoto and Niger Republic
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has energised two newly installed power transformers at its 330/132/33KV Birnin Kebbi Transmission Substation in Kebbi State, significantly raising power capacity in the region.
In a statement issued Sunday, TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed that the 100 MVA and 150 MVA transformers were energised at 1:18 p.m. and 2:56 p.m., respectively, on Friday, June 27, 2025.
“The installation of these additional transformers has increased the substation’s capacity from 300 MVA to 450 MVA,” Mbah stated.
The upgrade provides the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company with an additional 120 megawatts of bulk power, which is now available for distribution across Kebbi, Sokoto, and surrounding areas.
In addition to stabilising regional supply, the increased capacity also enables TCN to maintain uninterrupted power transmission to Niamey, Niger Republic, fulfilling Nigeria’s international electricity export obligations.
Mbah reaffirmed TCN’s commitment to expanding and maintaining the country’s transmission infrastructure to ensure a more robust, efficient, and reliable national grid.
“We are committed to the continued expansion and maintenance of the nation’s transmission system to ensure a more effective and efficient bulk power transmission nationwide,” the statement reads.
This development comes amid reports that Nigeria’s total electricity generation stood at 5,148.34 megawatts as of Friday, April 25, 2025, underscoring the urgent need for ongoing investments in transmission infrastructure to match growing demand.
