The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has responded to circulating reports of a national grid collapse on Saturday, categorizing the claims as inaccurate. In a statement issued by TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, the company clarified the events surrounding the disruption.
At approximately 1:41 PM on Saturday, the Osogbo-Ihovour line tripped, followed shortly by the Benin-Omotosho line. These incidents only affected the bulk power supply to the Lagos area, with no nationwide grid collapse. Prior to the trippings, the total generation on the grid was 4,335.63 Megawatts (MW), which dropped to 2,573.23 MW following the disruptions, indicating that the grid remained operational.
Mbah further detailed that the tripping impacted power supply to locations such as Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras. While most of the affected lines have since been restored, the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line is still under repair.
In her statement, Mbah assured the public that TCN is committed to improving the transmission grid despite the ongoing challenges and urged caution in sharing information, emphasizing the importance of accurate and verifiable reports.
