By Babatunji Wusu| The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has expressed concern over the growing vandalism of power transmission facilities in parts of Niger State, warning that the trend threatens electricity supply, public safety and economic activities.
Speaking during a community engagement visit to Lambata in Gurara Local Government Area, the General Manager of Transmission, Abuja Region, Engr. Musa Shuaibu, said repeated attacks on transmission infrastructure have become a serious challenge for the company.
According to him, vandalism was previously rare in the area but has now developed into a major concern, causing significant financial losses and disruptions to power supply.
“We have been having challenges with our transmission lines. These lines have been vandalised repeatedly. It has never happened before in this area, but now it has become worrisome to all of us,” he said.
Shuaibu revealed that about 14 spans of conductors on the 132kV transmission line in Lambata were recently vandalised. He noted that repairing the damaged facilities would cost approximately N32 million, funds that could have been invested in improving electricity infrastructure elsewhere.
The power infrastructure vandalism has affected a transmission line that has been in operation for more than 40 years. According to Shuaibu, the line plays a crucial role in transporting electricity from Shiroro through Minna, Bida and Suleja to Abuja.
He explained that damage to the infrastructure weakens economic activities, discourages investment and reduces revenue generation. He also warned that fallen conductors pose serious safety risks, as residual voltage can endanger residents, farmers and livestock in affected communities.
The TCN official urged traditional rulers, community leaders, vigilante groups and security agencies to work together to protect critical national infrastructure and curb power infrastructure vandalism.
Representatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Police Force pledged continued support in identifying, arresting and prosecuting those responsible for power infrastructure vandalism and their accomplices.
