Babatunji Wusu –
Chukwuemeka Igwe, 27, has been taken before an Akure magistrate court for reportedly threatening to kill his landlord and her children because he didn’t pay the rent on time.
Igwe, a resident of Ala-Elefosan in Akure, was accused by the police of violating the peace and making threats to kill.
The defendant committed the offense on December 6, 2023, at around 10:00 p.m. at his home in Ala-Elefosan, Akure, in the Akure Magisterial District, according to Prosecution Counsel Inspector Taiwo Oniyere.
He informed the court that following a dispute about home rent in the property, the defendant made threats to murder his landlord, Mrs. Deborah Sunday. The prosecutor claimed that the defendant threatened to kill the landlady and her children if they returned to the compound and used a cutlass to chase them out of her home.
The police prosecutor further claimed that the defendant behaved in a way that would make his cruel deed likely to disturb the peace. According to him, the crime violated Ondo State’s 2006 Criminal Code Law Sections 86 and 249(d).
In order to gather witnesses and review the case file, the prosecutor asked for an adjournment.
The prosecutor did not object to the defendant’s bail, but defense attorney G. Benard begged the court to grant his client the broadest possible bail. To preserve peace and quiet, the prosecutor asked the court to place the defendant on bond.
Judge Olusola Olujobi granted the defendant N200,000 in bail, with two sureties contributing the same amount. Olujobi postponed the case to January 28, 2023, for further consideration and advised the defendant to behave well and keep the peace till the matter was resolved.
