Babatunji wusu –
Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Willie Obiano, a former governor of Anambra State.
Obiano was charged with nine charges of allegedly committing an N4 billion fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
This conduct was allegedly committed by Obiano between March 2014 and March 2022 while he served as the South-East state’s governor.
The EFCC had nine allegations of money laundering against the former governor, to which he entered a not guilty plea on Wednesday.
When issuing the ruling, Justice Ekwo decided that the former governor ought to be kept within the court’s jurisdiction.
He gave the EFCC the command to give the court registrar the defendant’s travel documentation.
Ekwo then gave the registrar instructions to report the development to the Nigerian Immigration Service.
Slyvanus Tahir, SAN, the prosecution’s attorney, had asked the court to remand the former governor.
He then postponed the case till March 4, 5, 6, and 7 in order to continue the trial.
