Ruth Benson-Idahosa, the daughter of Church of God Mission International Archbishop Margaret Benson-Idahosa, has received a Special Award for her Anti-Human Trafficking Campaign in the United States of America.
The US State Department, represented by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, announced the release of the 2023 Trafficking Persons Report at the Award presentation ceremony.
The thorough analysis evaluates 188 nations and territories, including the United States, to provide an objective assessment of their efforts to prevent and address human trafficking.
The report’s principal purpose is to highlight successful anti-trafficking activities, identify areas for improvement, and eventually eliminate trafficking worldwide.
Secretary Blinken underscored the US government’s persistent commitment to combating human trafficking, which he views as a violation of human rights and personal autonomy. With over 27 million people still denied basic rights, the Secretary reaffirmed that the US stands united with others in the quest of putting an end to this horrible crime.
The event also honored the 2023 Tip Report Heroes, acknowledging their outstanding achievements to the fight against human trafficking.
Ruth Evon Benson-Idahosa of Nigeria was among the distinguished recipients. Her organization, Pathfinders Justice Initiative and Hub of Economic Resources For Survisors Africa, focuses on empowering survivors of sex trafficking through transformative programs that address the root causes of exploitation.
Ruth Evon Benson-Idahosa’s advocacy work has also aided in the improvement of anti-trafficking policies and legislation in Nigeria.
The awardee expressed thanks for the honor and appreciated the joint efforts of many individuals who work diligently for justice and healing.
She told the heartbreaking story of Faith, a Nigerian lady who was trafficked and tortured to the horrors of Europe’s sex business until she died. “Faith’s ordeal represents the harsh reality faced by thousands of victims,” she stated, emphasizing the urgent need for action.
Benson-Idahosa asked world leaders to promote reconciliation and fight trafficking with a more integrated, intersectional, and interdependent approach.
She also advocated for a shift in consciousness that prioritizes the protection of all individuals’ interests, rights, and dignity, emphasizing the need of amplifying the voices of survivors and local communities.
The Nigerian activist urged governments to address systemic failures and prioritize people’s well-being over profit, emphasizing the importance of inviting those who had previously been excluded to participate in decision-making processes, ensuring that those most impacted by trafficking had their voices heard.
Benson-Idahosa highlighted the importance of compassion, understanding, and long-term structural reform commitments.
She encouraged people to conduct tiny everyday gestures that promote love, kindness, and the common good, since these actions help to reconcile a world riddled with injustice.
In a related event, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki issued a message of congratulations to Ruth Evon Benson-Idahosa, Founder of Pathfinders Justice Initiative and Hub of Economic Resources For Survisors Africa, for the prestigious Award.
