A special task force of judges has been established by Nigeria’s Federal High Court (FHC) to hear and decide all pre-election cases that come before it quickly.
Dr. Catherine Oby-Christopher, the FHC’s assistant director of information, said this on Wednesday in Abuja.
Oby-Christopher claims that a letter sent out by Justice John Terhemba Tsoho, the court’s honorable chief judge, states that a team of judges had to be chosen due to the overwhelming number of pre-election lawsuits that had been filed.
Due to the urgency of the time-sensitive electoral matters, judges who are part of the Task Force will suspend all routine proceedings in their respective courts.
The circular stated, “It has become imperative to form a Task Force to promptly dispose of the proceedings, particularly in those Judicial Divisions with a glut of them, in light of the high volume of pre-election cases filed thus far; with the impending accompanying risk of lapsing.”
The judges will have four weeks to decide the pre-election cases, according to Justice Tsoho.
