According to well-known Nigerian comedian Ali Baba, the Nigerian constitution is “not actually a constitution.”
He recently made an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Show as a guest, where he discussed Nigeria’s “orientation issues.” Nigeria’s constitution was one of the concerns he brought up in the conversation, emphasizing that it was a “big problem.”
The comedian replied, “Our constitution is the biggest problem we have now; it’s an anomaly, it’s not actually a constitution; it’s something that some people drafted, and got some lawyers to knock it together because the constitution doesn’t speak to the growth and national development of our country.”
In addition, Ali Baba discussed the development of Nigeria and recommended that the federal government grant autonomy to each state.
The fact is that allowing each state to earn its own revenue is necessary for this nation to expand. If they so choose, the federal government can help them, but the money and revenue that some states bring in shouldn’t be distributed to everyone else, he stated.
The Nigerian military abolished the previously existing regions and built 36 states as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) between 1967 and 1996. Additionally, 774 local government units were established from those 36 states. Ali Baba, however, voiced his opinion that many states were founded merely to placate certain military officers.
“Well, this man is a senior military officer from this region; we can’t grant him a state at this time. Instead, let’s establish a state and provide for those people.” Or the matter of, “Let’s just balance it with some states in the south so that it looks deliberate because some of the states that were created needed to be local governments,” he remarked, in reference to the desire to create four states in the north.
