The 2024 budget plan was approved on Wednesday by the five members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Edison Ehie.
The budget projections had previously been submitted to the assembly for approval by the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
The estimated N800 billion budget for the 2024 fiscal year—dubbed the “Budget of Renewed Hope, Consolidation, and Continuity” by the governor—was adopted by the State Executive Council on Monday.
Following the confirmation of Ehie’s legitimacy as the House of Assembly’s speaker by a High Court, the group decided to move the plenary session of the house to Government House, Port Harcourt.
This occurs when Governor Fubara’s administration continues to demolish the assembly complex.
During the plenary, the 27 House members who support the immediate governor of the state, Nyesom Wike, and the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were not present.
27 MPs who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) had their seats declared vacant by the House.
