The Spanish football federation (RFEF) has suspended Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski for three games after he was dismissed in his team’s 2-1 victory at Osasuna last week.
In what was to be his final game of his career, defender Gerard Pique, who was on the replacement bench, was given a four-game suspension after being sent out at halftime for protesting to and abusing the referee.
In the eleventh minute, Lewandowski was cautioned for tugging Nacho Vidal back, and 20 minutes later, he was given a second caution for what appeared to be elbowing David Garcia in the face.
Lewandowski received a three-game suspension, according to the RFEF Officiating Committee, for making a gesture toward the official after being issued a red card that demonstrated “contemptuous attitude towards the referees.”
Nearly ten years had passed since Lewandowski’s first red card, which came in February 2013 while playing for Borussia Dortmund against Hamburg in the Bundesliga.
When LaLiga resumes after the World Cup, the Polish striker will miss matches against Espanyol, Atletico Madrid, and Getafe.
