Babatunji Wusu –
Three Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MPs were expelled by the National and State Assembly Tribunal in Jos, the capital of Plateau, for lack of structure.
The representatives for the State House of Assembly’s Langtang Central, Rukuba/Iregwe, and Pengana seats are Remvyat Nanbol, Agbalak Adukuchill, and Happiness Akawu.
The panel headed by Justice Muhammad Tukur issued its ruling, concluding that the PDP was not constitutionally authorized to sponsor the fired MPs because it disobeyed court orders to hold ward congresses that would have given it a legitimate structure.
Tukur continued, saying the PDP lacked organization and couldn’t support candidates in elections.
The panel went on to say that the petitioners had the legal right to contest PDP’s participation in the election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was directed by the tribunal’s chairman to revoke the Certificates of Return from the ousted MPs and give fresh ones to the election’s winners.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s victory is being contested by Dr. Nentawe Yiltwatda, an All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for governor. Mutfwang ran as a PDP candidate.
After receiving 525,299 votes against Yiltwatda’s 481,370, INEC pronounced Mutfwang the winner of the election. However, the APC candidate challenged the result in court.
Four PDP National Assembly members, including a senator, have already been fired by the tribunal due to issues with party organization.
