Once more, gunmen are said to have ambushed and killed three police officers at a roadblock in Agbani, the administrative center of Enugu State’s Nkanu West Local Government Area.
It was learned that the event occurred early on Saturday morning at the Agbani town railway crossing.
In less than 12 hours, two shooters assassinated former rural development commissioner Ozo Onuzulike and his older brother Elvis in their hometown of Nkpokolo-Achi, in the state’s Oji-River Council Area.
Sources told our correspondent that the gunmen rushed the checkpoint near the Agbani police station at around 8 am and shot the three cops dead at close range, despite the fact that the police had not yet acknowledged the occurrence.
The incident appeared as if the shooters were already someplace watching their actions before hitting, the source claims.
The policemen were caught off guard since they were busy extorting Okada riders when the gunmen descended on them, according to a local witness to the attack.
You won’t feel sorry for them if you see what they do here. How can you be at a checkpoint in a place where there have been numerous attacks and just sit back and take money and provide change to Okada riders?
Sadly, these thieves exploited the situation and attacked them. Three people were shot dead, while three more managed to flee after being shot. The criminals hauled away their weapons and fled via the Ugboka-Nara Unateze road.
The Enugu State Police Command hasn’t responded to the attack as of yet.
Additionally, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the command’s spokesperson, was unable to be reached for comment since he did not answer his calls.
Ndukwe, however, claimed that the command had started a manhunt for the evading culprits in a statement in response to the murder of the former Commissioner Onuzulike and his brother.
He claimed that while trying to flee to Anambra State, two of the gunmen were killed by joint security personnel.
“Preliminary report reveals that two of the gunmen, said to have infiltrated Oji-River from nearby Anambra community in the evening hours of Friday, attacked and killed one Gabriel Onuzulike (identified as former Chairman of Oji-River LGA and Commissioner in Enugu) and his brother at Nkpokolo-Achi in Oji-River LGA. They were neutralized by a joint police/Army team,”
“The team quickly responded to a distress call on the event and caught the gunmen in the same LGA’s Inyi community as they were trying to flee into Anambra.
“Among other incriminating items, the Team also found an AK-47 rifle with two magazines loaded with ammunition, a Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep that belonged to the deceased victims, a Toyota Camry that the gunmen tried to steal from another victim, and a RAV4 Jeep they used for the heinous criminal operation.
As a result of the Joint Team’s overwhelming firepower during the ensuing gun duel, many of the attackers fled into a nearby forest with significant gunshot wounds. The manhunt for these individuals is still ongoing. The progress will be communicated going forward.
In an effort to represent the Aninri/Awgu/Oji River federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Onuzulike recently ran in and lost the Peoples Democratic Party primary.
Between 2015 and 2019, he worked as a commissioner for the Ugwuanyi administration. Prior to that, he was elected Chairman of the Oji River Local Government Area Council for two consecutive terms.
