Senator Barinada Mpigi, representing Rivers South East Senatorial District in the 10th Senate, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing into law the bill establishing the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Karoma/Szakpeners, Tal, Ogoniland.

Speaking to journalists at the National Assembly on Wednesday, Senator Mpigi described the move as a testament to President Tinubu’s commitment to inclusive governance and sustainable development in the region. As the sponsor of the bill, he emphasized the university’s importance in providing educational opportunities, fostering innovation, and equipping Ogoni youths with critical skills for the future.

“The university is more than just an institution; it is a beacon of hope for our people,” Mpigi stated. “It represents a commitment to nurturing the talents and aspirations of the Ogoni people, ensuring they contribute meaningfully to the nation and the world.”

He expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for assenting to the bill, acknowledging the significant role the university will play in addressing key issues affecting Ogoniland.

“On behalf of the Ogoni representatives in the 10th National Assembly, I extend our profound gratitude to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for graciously signing this bill into law,” he said.

Senator Mpigi also called for unity among the Ogoni people, urging them to remain peaceful and vigilant as efforts continue to address the challenges in the region.

“This achievement is not mine alone but a collective effort reflecting the voices, resilience, and unwavering support of our people and leaders. As we move forward, we must remain united and patient, ensuring that our journey toward justice and development continues,” he added.

He further assured his constituents of his commitment to advocating for their interests at all levels of governance.

“We cannot conclude without appreciating the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, for their invaluable support in ensuring the swift passage of this crucial bill,” he stated.

Senator Mpigi also acknowledged the support of FCT Minister Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, whose guidance was instrumental in achieving this milestone.

Reflecting on the legislative journey of the bill, he noted that former President Muhammadu Buhari had declined to sign it during the 9th Assembly despite its passage by both chambers of the National Assembly. However, in the 10th Senate, it was successfully passed and signed into law by President Tinubu.

“When this bill was presented to the President, he signed it in the presence of the Ogoni Caucus leadership in the National Assembly. This shows that President Tinubu is a listening leader who governs beyond party lines and for all Nigerians,” he remarked.

Senator Mpigi also paid tribute to the late Ken Saro-Wiwa, stating that the move aligns with his vision for the upliftment of Ogoniland.

“With this decision, even our past heroes will be smiling in their graves,” he concluded.
