…President says move will strengthen reforms, boost border security
…Adeniyi to remain in office until August 2026

President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.

Originally scheduled to retire in August 2025, Adeniyi will now serve until August 2026, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga explained that the decision was taken to enable Adeniyi consolidate ongoing reforms and deliver fully on key initiatives under the Tinubu administration.

“The President recognises his leadership and is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Customs Service in trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security,” the statement noted.

Adeniyi, who was appointed as Comptroller-General in October 2023, initially served in an acting capacity before being confirmed for the role. Under his watch, the Customs Service has undertaken several reform measures aimed at improving operational efficiency and curbing leakages in revenue.

The extension aligns with the administration’s goal of maintaining institutional stability and ensuring continuity in the implementation of national trade policies.
