President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to fully implement the Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments, directing governors to end all forms of interference with council funds.
The President issued the directive on Thursday during a meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caucus at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he stressed that compliance with the judgment must be practical, direct, and effective.
Tinubu said local government autonomy can only exist when councils receive their allocations without obstruction, insisting that direct funding remains the only genuine path to compliance.
He urged party leaders to reflect on the implications of the apex court’s ruling and align governance strategies to strengthen democracy at the grassroots.
According to the President, withholding local government funds undermines governance and contradicts the spirit and letter of the Supreme Court decision.
Tinubu also charged APC governors to demonstrate flexibility and proactive leadership by remaining deeply engaged in developments within their states, including at the local government level.
He noted that effective leadership requires tolerance, adaptability, and continuous involvement in grassroots governance to ensure stability and development nationwide.
