-President reaffirms commitment to troops’ welfare and modern military reforms
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Nigerian military to decisively confront Boko Haram terrorists, bandits, separatists, and other armed groups threatening Nigeria’s peace and territorial integrity.
Issuing the stern directive during the grand finale of the 2025 Nigerian Army Day celebration held in Kaduna State, the president declared, “The time to crush the criminals is now.”
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu emphasized that his administration remains fully committed to the welfare of military personnel and would continue to invest heavily in modern equipment, intelligence, and human capital to enhance operational efficiency.
“The Nigerian Army has never been just a force of arms. It has been a symbol of unity and duty,” Shettima said, quoting the president.
Tinubu recalled the Army’s historic role in ending the Nigerian Civil War, referencing the legendary words of General Yakubu Gowon, who was present at the event: “No victor, no vanquished.” The president noted that the Army’s actions during and after that conflict helped reinforce national unity and reaffirm Nigeria’s shared destiny.
He also paid tribute to soldiers who have laid down their lives in the line of duty, as well as those actively serving in the face of constant threats to national stability.
“They have fought not for conquest, but for peace. They have stood not for power, but for principle. Today, we honour their enduring sacrifice,” Tinubu said.
He further reminded officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Armed Forces to remain professional, courageous, and disciplined in the discharge of their duties, while adhering to the constitution and international standards.
Across the African continent and around the world, the president noted, Nigerian troops have raised the national flag high on peacekeeping missions, defending the values of peace and humanity.
The 2025 Army Day celebration served as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by men and women in uniform and the renewed determination of the Nigerian government to restore and protect national security.
