On Sunday night, Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, stated that no increased tax rates would be imposed on Nigerians under President Bola Tinubu.
Oyedele, who was appointed by the President to head the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms in August, revealed this on his X handle while answering Frequently Asked Questions about the committee’s goals and efforts so far.
Oyedele, who added that no new taxes would be imposed, stated that the committee’s goal is to reduce the number of taxes imposed on Nigerians.
“We do not intend to impose new taxes or raise tax rates,” he stated. Instead, our mandate is to minimize the number of taxes and levies while harmonising revenue collection in order to reduce the burden on individuals and enterprises. The goal is to avoid taxing investment, capital, output, or poverty. We intend to evaluate and re-enact the principal tax laws holistically, reducing the need for frequent modifications through yearly finance acts.”
